High Resolution, Long Lifetime Magnetic Probes

K-Tek Nanotechnology offers a new development – high resolution long lifetime magnetic probes. The proper probe is very important during magnetic measurements. Magnetic probes should provide high resolution images and “survive” under high-humidity conditions. Our magnetic probes have special protective layers to help avoid oxidation and increase cantilever lifetime. Sharp silicon tips with coatings less than 40 nm allow you to obtain 20-30 nm magnetic resolution.

Low Moment high resolution magnetic probes probes have 15nm CoCr coating, which is two times thinner compared to standard MFM tips. Decreasing the magnetic moment of MFM tip is important in imaging low coercitive magnetic samples, such as iron garnet films with coercitivity of approximately 20 Oe.

NT-MDT offers new development – high resolution long lifetime magnetic probes MFM01 and MFM10. Special protective layers help to avoid oxidation and increase the cantilever lifetime substantially. Sharp silicon tip with coating less than 40 nm allows obtaining magnetic resolution till 20-30 nm!

The choice of the proper probe is very important during magnetic measurements. The magnetic probe should provide high resolution images with good magnetic signal. Besides it should “survive” under high-humidity conditions.

Low Moment High Resolution Magnetic tips MFM_LM possess 15nm* CoCr coating, which is two times thinner compare to standard MFM tips. Decreasing the magnetic moment of MFM tip is important in case of imaging low coercitive magnetic samples, such as iron garnet films with coercitivity of about 20 Oe.

Using standart MFM tips with 40nm CoCr coating leads to perturbation of the magnetic domain pattern and  tip induced local magnetization reversal of the sample (Fig. 1).
Low moment MFM tips with reduced magnetic stray fields significantly reduce magnetization reversal during imaging and improve quality of the MFM results (Fig. 2).

Magnetic measurement in high external magnetic fields demands corresponding coercitivity value of MFM tip and stability of its magnetization distribution during imaging. Applying magnetic field higher than coercitivity leads to unavoidable magnetization reversal of magnetic tip and corresponding distortion of magnetic image.

Typical magnetic tips with CoCr coating usually demonstrate coercivity of about 200Oe in vertical Z direction and 800Oe in horizontal X or Y direction.
Novel magnetic tips based on Co high coercivity alloy posses essentially higher values – 500-800Oe in vertical direction and more than 2kOe in horizontal direction.
Prior to first use, magnetization of the tip along its axis (Z direction) in a strong magnet (more than 1kOe) is recommended. This helps improve the magnetic signal by 1.5 times. Coercivity of the probes remains the same.
